"I didn't intend to open Laluna in Grenada," says Bernardo Bertucci, a former fashion-industry consultant for Prada and Giorgio Armani who scoured the region before alighting on the picture-perfect beach. "But the island really is what you always imagined the Caribbean to be." It's fair to say that Laluna's opening in 2000 almost single-handedly propelled Grenada's leap into high-end tourism. Resplendent in a Mediterranean-Asian design scheme by Gabriella Giuntoli—who often works with Armani—the resort rises steeply from a beach overlooking the water. Kate Moss, Jerry Hall, and Anna Wintour have all lounged at Laluna hassle-free, hiding from the world in one of the 16 thatched-roof cottages that sport Balinese four-poster beds and private plunge pools on private verandas. There's also Laluna restaurant, which serves the best Italian on the island.
