Hamburg nightlife is a bastion of discretion and tolerance. Intensely atmospheric after dark, the city is blanketed in fog that seems to swallow up everything (except in summer, when the fog clears and the sun seems to never set). The St. Pauli district is home to the city's counterculture, with squatters, semi-underground nightclubs, and the Reeperbahn red-light district competing for space. Just north of St. Pauli is the quieter but appealing Schanze area, full of minimalist-design bars and restaurants. The rest of the city tends toward a more familiar approach, split between full-on nightclubs and locals-only bars.
