My first trip to the Big Island Of Hawaii was because I had a desperate need to see my son during his freshman year at the University or Hawaii at Hilo. I 'HAD' to do it for less than $1000, I mean everything had to be under $1000! I found a great deal online, for a really nice hotel in HIlo for 5 nights (less than $200), I rented a small car for$200 for an entire week. My son and I spent many days, driving around the island, seeing the 'green sand beach" the southern most point of the USA. We bought some cheap snorkeling gear at Wal Mart and saw wonderful fish up close and personal. I found a cool little Bed and Breakfast just east of Kona and we spent a peaceful night there. We woke up looking 5 miles down to the Ocean, but it seemed like it was 'right there'! We were always able to find healthy little cafes, that were affordable and the few times, that we could no,t we would ask a young hippie, where we could find some 'cheap grub' and they would always send us to a sweet spot. I saw giant sea turtles crawling up on the 'Black Sand Beach' and loved the little town close by. We also made a day trip to 'volcano' and what a revelation! I had never seen anything so massive and freaky and we did not have to spend hardly any money there. We sorta tagged along a real tour, probably looked funny to the paying tourist's, but nobody chased us off. My son lived his entire life in Telluride Colorado, where he was a radical snowboarder,so I did not think he would be able to adjust to this climate, especially with no snow! But He showed me an amazing site, we drove to the top of another old Volcano and there was a ton of snow and it was freaking freezing up there!!! But how cool was that! I actually came to fall deeply in love with the Big Island, it is not pretentious, like many of the so called resorts, that I have visited in the past, the people were friendly and I felt at home! I was able to find a cheap round trip flight out of Oakland California, so my entire trip was cheap, adventurous and memory making fun. I would recommend to any parent to send their kids to college in Hawaii, you will love spending time with them there!!! I would venture to say that anyone single, married couple or your entire family, could spend a wonderful week on the Big Island and make it home with a little money in your pocket.
