Ho Chi Minh City hotels

Less than a decade ago, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) hotels consisted mostly of a few grim government-run properties, plus a bevy of budget guesthouses. Although the backpacker ghetto in Pham Ngu Lao remains, international brands like Hyatt and Sheraton have opened top-flight hotels in the heart of District 1 (for the lay of the land in HCMC, see our Fact Sheet). Downtown Saigon is also home to several fabled colonial-era establishments, such as the Continental Hotel and Rex Hotel, that served generations of writers and war correspondents. Now owned and operated by a state firm, Saigontourist, they have undergone sweeping upgrades, but still fall a notch below the private-sector players.
