Oahu hotels
Most hotels in Oahu are spread along the world-famous Waikiki Beach. It's still a beautiful stretch of shore (the first hotels on the island—the Sheraton Moana Surfrider and the Halekulani—are still in operation here), and the most convenient place to stay if you'd rather not drive and don't mind the high-rises and crowds. The Aqua chain has brought hip and affordable boutique hotels to the area, which are very popular with Japanese tourists. But luxury can also be found on the remote and less-developed North Shore at the Turtle Bay Resort, and on the island's quieter, more residential southwest coast (where the calm man-made beaches at Ko Olina are great for families). A nice compromise is the newly renovated Kahala Resort (formerly the Mandarin Oriental), with its own private beach. It's just ten minutes outside Waikiki, but well positioned for escapes via scenic Highway 72.
Everyone's Honolulu hotel fantasy includes a room with a view of the surf, but you'll pay a pretty penny for that. (And you won't always hear that surf—ask first, if that matters to you.) Don't worry if a garden room is all your budget will allow: They're usually just as close to the beach as the more expensive units.
