Before you even consider, nay, even speak the word Budapest, learn to speak basic Hungarian. Now, this is not an easy task. I am fairly ok with languages, and I only remember one word after spending almost 2 weeks in Hungary. Buy the books, tapes, Rosetta Stone even- whatever you have to do. I know that sounds extreme, and I know a lot of travelers will dismiss this as overboard, But trust me, I have been to over half of Europe and never encountered the language barrier I did in Hungary. The people who did not have this experience in Hungary probably went on a group tour, or had the money for an interpreter. For those of us not so fortunate, we'll need to do our homework. My wife and I went on our honeymoon there, and took on the city on our own- no pre-booked package tour here. Take the time to study- some consider this the hardest language in the world.
