Chicago has really cool neighborhoods and really diverse food establishments and entertainment revues. I know the visitors all love window shopping on Michigan avenue and kicking it in Millenium park but buy a one month unlimited ride bus pass and go crazy. Visit the main museums, their cute but also go visit the Mexican museum, eat some mexican food at a restaraunt where the chef learned to cook in mexico, go to the various different cultural centers and visit a nearby cafe. Swedish, Polish, Jewish, African American, Jamaican, Ethiopian, almost every culture has a cafe with food that is authentic. The museums are cheaper than the "name brands" Go on the web visit the city of chicago websites and the museum websites, find out free days or times. You can visit them for free or maybe cheaper with "passes". Don't forget to check out the southside for great blues and southern - soul food ( and good vegetarian too) visit the universities for low cost sports, We have Northwestern, UIC, and others near or in the city. Keep 5 dollars in singles, some loose change, the local cab number and an emergency 50 in case you get tired and want to take a cab to the hotel. There are beautiful plant conservatories, a free zoo, a zoo that cost a bit but it is great, Six flags with free water park, and for you shoppers Gurnee mills by the six flags. Worth a one day car rental. Put the kiddies at six flags and then go shopping at our biggest outlet mall. Chicago is awesome. Except during blizzards... there is always a catch. If the roads are full of snow stay close to downtown and walk, they clear the downtown sidewalks rather quick, for a few blocks take cabs or jump on the bus. A irde is 225, it usually takes 2 rides to get somewhere beyond downtown so just find a currency exchange and buy a pass. No point in paying 30 dollars for a cab in traffic when you can pay 2.25. Pack light and you can even take the trains for 2.25 right into ohare or midway airports! Or if you don't want that, ask the concierge or manager if anyone is leaving with you, share a ride with 2 to 5 others depending on the size cab and you will save alot. report a problem
