Concierge.com's insider take:
Convinced of its esteemed status in Istanbul's most coveted location and its erstwhile standing as the city's finest deluxe lodgings, the Marmara doesn't seem to have done much to reinvent itself in the face of the city's new crop of high-end competitors. What management has done to keep up with the Joneses (or Carltons, as it were) is refurbish some of the rooms and suites. But if you don't request one when booking, you might just as easily end up in a slightly shabby room with ill-matched furnishings, fading pictures, and aging bath-ware as in one with appealing, well-coordinated upholstery, Ottoman-inspired marble bathrooms, and a lofty view of the Bosphorus. If you end up in the latter—or if you shell out for one of the junior or Flying Carpet suites—you'll find the lofty '70s-style lobby quaintly retro, with its large fireplace, multiple seating areas, and nightly jazz combo. Otherwise it's just a conference hotel with a good gym and an unbeatable situation right on Taksim Square.
