WHEN TO GO

The best time to visit Jackson is in either the winter or late fall. If you must visit in the summer, do so earlier or later in the season. The busiest month of the year is July, when more than three quarters of a million people pass—very slowly—through town on their way to Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks. Jackson's two most popular events—the One Fly Event and the Fall Arts Festival—both occur in September, and if you're not a die-hard fly-fisherman or wildlife art collector, you might want to skip that month, too. In October, the valley finally calms down as it gears up for the winter season. Evenings get crisp and the male elk begin bugling, signaling the start of mating season. Come wintertime—the more relaxed season in Jackson—the lifts run from early December to early April, with peak conditions in January. Pack warmly, though: Daytime highs in the teens are not uncommon.

HOW TO GET THERE

Downtown Jackson is eight miles due south of the Jackson Hole Airport (307-733-7682; www.jacksonholeairport.com). Four major airlines serve the airport: American Airlines flies direct to Chicago all winter; Delta has connections to Denver and Salt Lake City year-round and nonstop flights from Cincinnati and Atlanta in the winter; Northwest flies to Minneapolis; and United serves Denver all year. By road, Salt Lake City is 307 miles south, while Denver is 523 miles to the southeast.

GETTING AROUND

Almost all of the major car-rental companies serve the airport. Buckboard Transportation (307-733-1112 or 877-791-0211; www.buckboardtrans.com) is the main taxi and shuttle service in town. Alltrans (307-733-3135 or 800-443-6133; www.jacksonholealltrans.com) also offers shuttle service from the airport and runs trips to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

If you're staying at Teton Village, consider going without a car rental. The shops and restaurants are within walking distance, and most hotels have complimentary shuttle service to the airport and downtown Jackson.
