Its driveway seems to be longer, its porte cochere grander, than at other Jamaican resorts, and a brigade of doormen leap to swing open the big bronze-and-glass doors. Inside, the 40-foot-high lobby of polished mahogany faces a wall of tall windows overlooking the gardens, the pool, and the beach. This is Grand Hotel to the nth degree. The 427 guest rooms got a subtle face-lift in 2008 and are exactly what you expect from the Ritz-Carlton—plump multi-pillowed beds with Frette linens, antique reproduction furnishings, lavish marble baths, large balconies—although only a quarter of them face directly onto the sea. It's worth shelling out a little extra for a room on the fifth-floor Club Level for its dedicated concierge, computer access (no need to drag the laptop), and continuous food and beverage service. Among the six on-site dining options, Jasmine, with its innovative Caribbean-Asian cuisine (Mongolian glazed lamb with ginger-spun sweet potato, snapper with a saltfish crust and lime chile vinagrette), is the standout.
