I lived in Kyoto for a year. It is a magical and etheral city, which still manages to retain the feel of Old Japan. My favorite time to visit is in the early Fall. NEVER go in August. This time of year all of Japan is mobbed by locals and tourists alike. Must Stay: Ryokan for at least one night. Try the beautiful and authentic Kyoto Garden Ryokan Yachiyo. Must See: (1) Kinkakuji Temple - truly amazing. (2) Whatever you do, you absolutely can not miss Kiyomizudera. It is truly a transformative experience. Must Do: (1) Play Pachinko (2) Hit a Ramen Bar for an incredible and delicious late night local snack. You will dream of the flavor and rich satisfying broth for a long time. (3) Try to spot Geisha & Maiko in Gion. If you are a woman, you can get a first hand experience and insight into the life by going to a geisha photography studio. You will choose a kimono, dress in the traditional style, have your makeup applied and be photographed as a geisha. Have your hotel arrange: report a problem
