For pet lovers who need a pet connection while on vacation, or for those who wish to see a top flight organization, consider stopping by the Kauai Humane Society. Their attractive facility is located south of Lihue on the main road, near Kauai Community College. We stopped in there on a rainy day in late January, 2008. My wife stated to me just as we walked in the door, "We will never have a border collie." The first dog we saw was a scrawny black and white border collie with one blue eye and one brown. He had been abused and was being treated for a broken bone in his throat. We tried with friends on the island to get him adopted. On the last day we were there, no one had adopted him. We decided he was meant to be a part of our family and we arranged to bring him to our home in Denver. He was not ready to travel when we left Kauai so we had to have him air freighted a month later. He has gained 12 pounds and has learned to trust us. He has become a smart and loving being who seeks out human contact. He is the most wonderful souvenir we have ever brought home from our travels. We named him Kai which means ocean in Hawaiian in honor of his Hawaiian heritage. report a problem
