Kauai restaurants
Part of what makes Kauai so special is that it's not very developed, so the dining scene is limited compared with other islands. There are several excellent restaurants in the resort areas of Poipu, Kapaa, and Hanalei. And because nothing on the island is farther than a two-hour drive apart, having dinner in Kapaa when you're staying in Hanalei is not out of the question.
The main town of Lihue is sort of a culinary wasteland, with the notable exception of Gaylord's restaurant, in the old Kilohana Sugar Plantation. But Kapaa, with the casual Mermaids lunch spot and the "I- can't-believe-there's-no-meat-in-this-dish" Blossoming Lotus, are just 20 minute drive up the coast. Duane's Ono Char Burger, popular with local surfers, is another 20 minutes north in Anahola. The grand hotels in Hanalei, including the Princeville Resort and the Hanalei Bay Resort, contain Kauai's best upscale restaurants. You'll won't got hungry in Poipu, though the restaurants there tend to be less than exceptional. When heading west to Waimea Canyon or the Napili Coast, be sure to make a lunch stop at Hanapepe Café and a dessert stop at Jo-Jo's Clubhouse for local-style shave ice.
