Concierge.com's insider take:
The ancient Chinese fishing village of Hua Thanon is filled with shops hawking beach-chic dresses and market vendors selling local confections and housewares made from organic materials. Two French expats run the India-inspired boutique Siddharta, which sells Thai hill-tribe silver jewelry, Nepalese floral hippy frocks, and floppy beach hats (210 Moo 1 Tambon Ban; 66-77-233-264; www.siddharta.fr). Next door, you'll find African-inspired frocks at the brightly hued ZER (215 Moo 1; 66-77-232-121). While the phallic seaside stones here known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai, grandmother and grandfather respectively, do not merit a glance, the narrow lane nearby is crammed with stalls selling chic hand-carved coconut wood housewares that cost only a few coins. Also look for homemade garamear, a glutinous confection of coconut, palm sugar, and sticky rice best enjoyed immediately.
