We selected the Hotel Granvia because of the location on top of the Kyoto train station as well as restaurants and other factors. Check-in was smooth. During the four days we were in Kyoto, I made extensive use of the concierge staff: they are charming, helpful and interested... in addition to the fact that they know and can accomplish just about anything. The concierge staff are the best in any hotel we have ever visited. The location is awesome! You can go up to the roof of the train station for a great view, down to underground levels for an incredible array of restaurants and shops, or wander through the hotel for a wide selection of restaurants and shops. One of the area's largest department stores is part of the train station's complex. You could spend a month in the train station and hotel and still not see everything! Two restaurants were our favorites: Southern Court where we had an excellent dinner, and Grand Jour (the lobby lounge). We liked the Grand Jour because of the simple, light menu. Very good service and value. If we return to Kyoto, we would absolutely stay at Hotel Granvia. It is a fairly large hotel, but everything is done on a very personal basis. We were treated like family members, and really hated to leave. In some hotels, it is about the building. Hotel Granvia is in a great building, but Hotel Granvia is also about the people. They have some of the best!
