London nightlife

To encourage a more Continental, laid-back attitude toward alcohol—and to discourage Londoners from imbibing as much liquor as possible before the 11 p.m. last call, a licensing law was passed in 2005 to allow local councils to grant 24-hour alcohol permits. Most have been awarded to hotels, but some clubs such as Fabric, Ministry of Sound (103 Gaunt St., SE1; 44-870-060-2666; www.ministryofsound.com/clubbing), and the End (18 W. Central St., WC1; 44-207-419-9199) offer round-the-clock partying. Most bars stay open only an hour or two longer, while some have pushed closing time to 3 a.m., especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

Bear in mind that in summer 2007, England's smoking ban came into effect; lighting up in bars and clubs is no longer permitted.
