Some criticize the old-fashioned food, but it's well worth the visit if you follow these rules: (1) Brave the fluorescent glare of the bar for a predinner martini—still the best in Los Angeles; (2) Ask to sit in the smaller, more dimly lit dining room when you're ready to eat; (3) Order simply—New York strip steak and braised short ribs are flawlessly executed classics.
