Concierge.com's insider take:
A couple of years ago Bastide was one of those snooty French joints where reservations required some serious IMDb credits. Now it's reopened with a focus on making everybody feel welcome. Chef Walter Manzke (formerly of L'Auberge in Carmel) and owner Joe Pytka have come up with a pan-Mediterranean tasting menu that changes slightly each day—try the Chilean turbot drizzled in a lemon-butter caper sauce or a deconstructed taco. The scene is for upscale foodies and special occasions, but it never takes itself too seriously—the quirky decor includes groovy beaded curtains, and the jolly sommelier Pieter Verheyde (a protégé of Alain Ducasse) is just as eager to talk about his French beagle as his stellar collection of French, Spanish, and California wines.
Open Tuesdays through Saturdays 6 to 10 pm.
