Until a few years ago, Lalaland, with its non-eating actresses and snack-and-split surfer dudes, was San Francisco's dumpy culinary sibling. Sure there were a few dazzling places (Spago and Matsuhisa come to mind), but they were reserved for special occasions—and VIPs. But chefs are now serving up serious food without the stuffiness. These new spots feature L.A.'s famously fresh, diverse fare, along with a commitment to quality no matter the price range. Juicy tomatoes and tender meat are piled into handmade tortillas. Sushi is an art form. And even hamburgers, Angelenos' indulgence food of choice, are being spiffed up with ingredients like arugula and blue cheese.
