The Sheraton is a long modern pile of a building spread along the Nile's east bank about two miles upriver from the center of town. Its 290 rooms and six suites are set in eight acres of gardens. There are two palm-fringed swimming pools, one of them overlooking the Nile. Furnishings in the rooms are contemporary but with soft lines and rich yet subdued colors that go a long way toward keeping them from looking too modular. There are nice touches such as arched windows in some of the garden-view rooms. The trio of restaurants includes one serving local and international dishes, an Italian dining room, and the Agra Indian restaurant featuring a massive wall relief of the Taj Mahal.
