Concierge.com's insider take:
El Nakhil is set in a pleasant garden on the west bank of the Nile on the edge of Geziret-el-Beirat, the village that has grown up around the ferry landing for boats from Luxor's east bank. It's a good bet if you prefer a small, family-run hotel, and want to set off for the Valley of the Kings without first negotiating a ride across the river. The immaculately clean inn is run with genuine hospitality by a young Egyptian-German couple, and the 14 simple (no TV or telephones) yet comfortable rooms with garden-view balconies cost about $40 for a double (cash only). Meals can be taken in the garden or on the roof terrace overlooking green fields and a Nile branch canal. The guesthouse plans to add a swimming pool soon. In the meantime, the guests can walk around the corner to the Nile Valley Hotel directly in front of the ferry landing, where small restaurants, taxis, and bike rental shops are located, and use its large pool for a nominal fee.
