Nightlife in Maine is concentrated in Portland, which has as many bars and restaurants per capita as San Francisco, most of them clustered around the Old Port District. You'll find a surprisingly eclectic selection of microbrew pubs (Gritty's), arty lounges, and fisherman's dives (J's Oyster Bar). The night gets rolling at 10 pm and ends when the bars close at 1 am. Don't be surprised if you make a few new acquaintances along your port crawlPortland residents are known for their friendly, laid-back attitude. Outside of Portland, Maine nightlife consists of two very different scenes: sipping cocktails on a waterfront terrace overlooking the Atlantic, or slugging back a round of beers in a roadhouse while the jukebox plays rock 'n' roll and '70s country hits.
