Concierge.com's insider take:
Kauai is a place where filmmakers come for the scenery—Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blue Hawaii, and South Pacific were all filmed here. And there's no better way to appreciate the beauty than by helicopter, which can get you to places that are impossible to reach by car or on foot, including the crater of Mount Waialeale, a massive, Edenic green gorge surrounded by walls of weeping waterfalls—one of the most beautiful places on earth. Two on-island outfits run similar circuits around the island: Blue Hawaiian Helicopters (Harbor Mall, Ste. 114; 3501 Rice St.; Lihue; 800-745-2583 [toll-free] or 808-871-8844; www.bluehawaiian.com) and Heli USA Airways, which flies the Eco-Star, a chopper that's more environmentally friendly than most other choppers (5-3541 Kuhio Hwy.; Princeville Airport; Princeville; 866-936-1234 [toll-free] or 808-826-6591; www.heliusa.com).
A note of warning: Although more than 100 helicopter tours launch and return successfully every month and visitors often claim it is the highlight of their trip, according to the state newspaper, The Honolulu Advertiser, the island averaged about one crash a year between 2001 and 2005. And a Heli USA crash in March 2007 killed four people and injured three others at the Princeville Airport. See Condé Nast Traveler's article "Risky Business" for more information on air-tour safety.
