The Maldives restaurants
The kitchen is the latest luxury battleground among resorts in the Maldives. As palates become more discerning, and travelers lengthen their stays in the atolls, resorts are adding specialty restaurants to keep tanned tummies more than just satisfied. Most guests remain on-site at mealtime, only venturing off for a romantic picnic on a deserted sandbank. Though boating to other resort restaurants is rare, it's happening more often in the North and South Male atolls, where islands are close enough to make trips to enticing tables worth it.
While some resorts dive into the Indian Ocean's past for inspiration, serving Middle Eastern cuisine in honor of early Arab seafarers, others have imported their brand's indigenous dishes, from Thai to authentic American hamburgers or pizza. Health eaters will be especially happy to know that all of these resorts either offer their own take on calorie-conscious cuisine or can easily accommodate those with special food considerations. If tasting the widest variety of exotic delicacies makes your vacation, consider focusing your accommodation selections on those on our restaurant list or narrow your neighborhood to North or South Male Atoll, where short distances between hotels make island-hopping possible.
