Martha's Vineyard shopping
You won't find chain stores on the Vineyardother than the touristy Black Dog T-shirt shops that seem to be everywhere. The island's shops range from funky general stores to art galleries and the wares run from cheap souvenirs to high-end crafts. Prices are resort-steep, but there are also original finds in places like retro Alley's General Store, the funky boutique Mix, and Midnight Farm, which is part-owned by Carly Simon. And let's face it: Where else can you buy scrimshaw? For an authentic island experience, buy direct from island artists and craftmakers at the Vineyard Artisans Festival (508-693-8989; vineyardartisans.com), every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm from Memorial Day through Columbus Day at the Grange Hall on State Road in West Tisbury.
The Vineyard's newest shopping neighborhood is a nascent arts district just outside the center of Oak Bluffs, anchored by the Alison Shaw Gallery. Across the street in a former general store, the Dragonfly Gallery showcases contemporary art by local and global artists (91 Dukes County Ave.; 508-693-8877; mvdragonfly.com), and Periwinkle Studios, in what was once a fish market, specializes in fabric art (92 Dukes County Ave.; 508-696-8304).
