I used to work for a hotel and this seemed to work with them and I've used it with others. Pick 3 hotels you'd like to stay in, get the best dates/rates off-season, if possible, but don't book the reservation. When you get there, approach each (or you may get lucky with the first) and ask for a better rate, showing them your homework done and the fact that you could get someplace else cheaper--nicely!, ie "I know Holiday Inn down the street could give me a better rate, but I'd really prefer to stay with you. Since it's so close to evening and you have so many rooms available, would you be willing to give us a home at (whatever) rate?" Be prepared to walk. I've seen people start to walk and get called back. report a problem
