Top destinations for travel in the United States in even in the world today, America’s Best Idea, or our national parks offer travelers from around the world the opportunity to experience and explore the most unique, historically important and beautiful areas in the country today. Created in 1916, the first national park was technically created much earlier in 1872 with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park. In 1916 however, the actual National Park Service was created to further protect this and the other national sites being created. By 1933, the scope of the NPS was changing to encompass more than just natural areas but those of historic importance and recreational enjoyment as well. Protector of 397 National Parks, lake shores, recreation areas, natural areas and rivers, each year, the service offers us a look at the top ten most visited. The numbers are out for 2011 and they offer some regulars as well as some surprises. Without further ado, we welcome you to the National Park Service top tens for 2011.
