Maui hotels
The first hotels in Maui popped up in Kaanapali, a stunning stretch of sugar sand outside the island's first town, Lahainaand the big chain hotels still line up along that famous west-coast beach, including the Westin and the mid-century Sheraton. A bit further north, you'll find new condos and family favorites like the Napili Kai Resort, followed by the tony development of Kapalua (where the Ritz-Carlton is located and the the Mercedes Benz Golf Classic is held each December).
South Maui is a newer and more popular resort area, crowned by the Beverly Hills of Maui, Wailea, where the Fairmont Kea Lani, Four Seasons Maui, and recently renovated Marriott Wailea hotels all share the same stretch of sandy beach. Just north of Wailea is Kihei, the condo capital of Maui and home to more budget-friendly lodging options. But some of the best hotels on the island are a bit far-flung. Consider the Inn at Mama's Fish House near the hippie/surfer town of Paia, or the luxury Hotel Hana-Maui, the jewel that awaits you at the end of the lovely yet grueling Hana Highway drive. If you're looking to save money on Maui hotels, consider giving up the premium for an ocean-view room. A garden-view room will usually cost much less but be no further from the beach. If your heart is set on that Pacific view, find out if staying on the ground floor will save you some doughhigher floors cost more and have more expansive vistas, but the ability to step from your room to the beach surely compensates.
