If you visit the big island, consider taking a trip to mookini heiau. You'll need 4-wheel drive to get there, although you can park and hike (about a mile uphill). Mookini heiau is an ancient place of worship from about AD 480. You can see the lava slab where people were beheaded. If you like ruins, this one is pretty neat.
