The NGV was probably one of my favorite visits in Melbourne. It's a really great museum with a huge variety of exhibits, but despite the variety, it's extremely manageable and not overwhelming like some other huge museums. While I was visiting, there was a special exhibition on all things Art Deco, which was great-- they had art, furniture, cars, fashion, architecture, etc. They also had an exhibit on modern chairs, gothic and alternative fashion, Chinese and East Asian arts, and many other things-- there's truly something for everyone. Probably the best part about the NGV is the events they hold-- during the Art Deco exhibition, they held events weekly (and sometimes more often), such as free jazz music on Wednesday nights or movies from the 1920's and 1930's, which was always a really fun, unique, and inexpensive way to spend the night.
