The nightlife scene in Melbourne is a mix of laid-back and arty-glam venues. Though bars and clubs alike tend to be low on the snooty factor, most expect you to dress the part of the urban partyer. It's a fashionable town, so leave the flip-flops at home. Most of the city's hippest bars and clubs are secreted away in city center alleyways, though a smattering can be found in the neighborhoods of Carlton, Richmond, and Fitzroy. South of the Yarra River, in Prahran, St. Kilda, and Albert Park, there are also chic clubs, late-night cafés, and groovy little dives. Though door policies tend to be relatively lax, if you're set on getting in, it's worth it to call a day or two ahead of time to put your name on the guest list.
