The location of this swish, though somewhat spare, contemporary hotel is unrivaled, especially if you have business in buzzing centre-ville. Accoutrements of the 99 earth-tone rooms run to glass walls; cosmopolitan, dark-wood furnishings; and refined erotic artwork—it's like house-sitting for your successful art-dealer aunt while she jets off to Hong Kong. Goose-down duvets and plush bathrobes encourage lazy mornings, which likely doesn't help the hotel's mostly corporate guests much. The downside is that service can be inattentive (don't be surprised if a maid bursts into your room without knocking) and, sure, the bowls of green apples that are ubiquitous in Montréal boutique hotels are getting tired. But for the energy and European sensibility rooted in the belief that style is substance, Le Germain delivers a sumptuous taste of that vie en rose visitors come to Montréal to find—right down to the supermodel staff and private-label bottled water.
