Located on the riverfront in Old Montréal, the 27-room Auberge du Vieux-Port has shabby-chic charm in spades. Exposed brick or stone walls, casement windows opening onto the St. Lawrence River (ask for that view), wood floors, and brass beds make it all romantic; wireless Internet, a glass of wine a day, and inclusive full American breakfast are just candy. Many rooms have Jacuzzis; all have the use of the gorgeous rooftop terrace. There are also 19 lofts and apartments in four buildings behind the hotel, useful for business stays and families—they're similar in decor, but they lack that river view.

Located in the historic district near the Place Jacques-Cartier and "painstakingly restored from an old waterfront warehouse, it has not lost its heritage or culture." Dine in nearby restaurants, since "the meals were average at Narcisse Bistro." Equipped with single or double whirlpools, rooms have original brick and stone walls, exposed beams, and brass beds. "Staff are immeasurably charming."
