My partner and I visited Marrakesh this past May and had a fantastic time. The food, the hotels, the shopping in the souks -- all of it was magical and transporting. We can't wait to go back! At no point did we ever feel hassled or harassed for being gay - nobody seemed to look askance at two men staying in the same room or dining together. I think the Moroccans are pretty open-minded about sexuality, despite what their religious leaders may say. (I also think dollars talk -- no one cares about your personal life when you're spending money.) Of course, we were respectful of our host country and their religious mores and customs -- i.e., no smooching on the street. We just behaved as normally as we do in NYC, and everything was fine. All three hotels we stayed at (Angsana Riads, Jnane Tamsna, and Kasbah Tamadot -- all of them are listed in the Hotels section of this guide) were more than welcoming. The only "gay bar" to speak of -- and I use the term lightly -- is Le Diamant Noir in the Gueliz district on Place de la Liberté (not far from the medina). It's an old-school nightclub with tables surrounding a dance floor, and it was pretty quiet the night we were there -- I think it was a Tuesday or Wednesday. But I can see it filling up on weekends and being a lot of fun. It's not really a gay bar per se, more of a gay-friendly place. I suspect all the major nightclubs (Le Comptoir, Theatro, Pacha) are going to be gay-friendly, given their mostly European clientele. Have an amazing time and please post about your experiences when you come back!
