While it's possible to find discreet corners of low-key cool nightlife in Munich, in-your-face glitz seems almost ubiquitous. Be prepared for a rauc_us_(and expensive) time. Maximilianstrasse, running through the Altstadt quarter north of Marienplatz, is nightlife's central artery, a street where the sound of a mega-expensive Italian sports cars can be heard at all times. There are plenty of Irish pubs and other more humble fare around Marienplatz itself, but for a taste of what makes Munich Munich you have to go for the gold, and be willing to pay the rather stiff prices (drinks usually start at about $11).
