Nantucket hotels
Whether you are staying in a stately resort or a modest B&B, prices on Nantucket seem high—until you realize that most hoteliers have only the summer season to make their livelihood. (A few downtown hotels stay open year-round, but most close after New Year's.) The Nantucket Lodging Association has a comprehensive list of island hotels (www.nantucketlodging.org); if you're visiting in high season, book your rooms at least four to six weeks in advance; three- and four-night minimums are de rigueur. If you want to try for a last-minute, single-night stay, Nantucket Visitor Services maintains a daily list of available rooms (25 Federal St., 508-228-0925; www.nantucket-ma.gov).
