I will never forget my only visit to Chanticleer. It was the mid 80's. I was 32 years old, enjoyed good food and made enough $ to occasionally visit Nantucket w/ my girlfriend. We decided to splurge one day and go to Chanticleer. It was a big deal for us; we were humble, excited and a little intimidated.
I ordered a bottle of Moet. When it arrived, it was announced so that everyone could hear, that our "non-vintage champaigne was being served. To be blunt they suceeded in humiliating us. After enduring appetizers we left.
I have since gone on to restore and/or decorate the best restaurants in NYC - Daniel, Cafe Boulud, Jean George, Bouley, Danube, etc. and have eaten frequently at them all.
I have always been treated with kindness and great food and wine and I consider many of these people my friends.
So it is with great delight that I have learned that Chanticleer is closed. This restaurant was a giant diservice to fine French food
