Like many other independent bookstores, Mitchell's was at risk of falling victim to Internet competition compounded by soaring rents. That was until Wendy Schmidt, a summer resident and wife of Google CEO Eric Schmidt, bought the building and ensured the store's survival. After four decades, the business itself has been sold to two longtime employees. With 40,000 titles crammed into its small space, Mitchell's has everything from light beach reads to serious literature, but it's best known for the back room filled with books about Nantucket whaling and maritime lore—the most complete selection of its kind. Local authors sign their books on Saturday mornings, and popular readings are held in the nearby Atheneum.
