Handwoven baskets have been made on Nantucket since the turn of the century. Sturdy but still delicate looking, the wooden-handled totes are known as "lightship baskets," because they were first woven in the mid-1800s by bored sailors stationed on floating lighthouses offshore. The local artisans at this studio about a mile south of Nantucket Town carry on the tradition, making expensive one-of-a-kind pieces, many decorated with scrimshaw and ivory inlays that are also crafted here.
