From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
The Kruisherenhotel, whose 60 rooms are in a former fifteenth-century church and cloister, caters to a highbrow crowd drawn to Maastricht for its burgeoning contemporary arts scene. The reception area and wine bar occupy the original nave and apse, while the open-walled breakfast room and library fill a newer mezzanine. Rooms are a mix of ancient and avant-garde, with oak parquet floors, Artemide lamps, chaise longues, and, in some, showy works of modern art. There are drawbacks, however: The service can be in-your-face snotty, and they nick you $28 for breakfast and $30 a day for parking. These irritations aside, the Kruisherenhotel is a good time. And if you can afford it, breakfast is a dazzling experience: The nave is filled with light from stained glass windows. —2006 Hot List

When to go: Spring for the flowers, summer for the city's cafés, and fall for the new gallery exhibitions.

Which room to book: A corner double such as No. 114, which has lots of light and a large original stained glass window; avoid the dark attic rooms (doubles, $351–$436).

Amenities: 24-hour Room Service, Bar/lounge
