New Orleans hotels

For a city of its size, New Orleans boasts one of the most diverse hotel scenes in the country. The list of local hotels contains representatives from every major chain, including a wide variety of long-standing boutique hotels, upstart design properties, and family-run bed and breakfasts.

Hotels are most plentiful in the Central Business District (right across Canal Street from the French Quarter) and the Warehouse District (a short walk from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center). With so many options so close to the center of town, travelers are rarely more than a short walk or taxi ride from most tourist sites.

In keeping with the city's convention-driven economy, room prices can vary wildly—it just depends on who's in town and how many beds are occupied on any given night. That doesn't bode well for those seeking a cheap rate during high-profile cultural events (Mardi Gras weekend, the two weeks of Jazz Fest in springtime, Voodoo Music Fest at Halloween). But it's generally safe to assume that the city's steamy weather will make for higher rates in winter and lower ones in summer.

A few high-profile properties have hit the scene in the past few years, from the reopened Ritz-Carlton (a post-Katrina straggler) to the Harrah's hotel complex (only worth it if your blackjack skills score you a comped room). In July 2009, the landmark Roosevelt Hotel (formerly the Fairmont) will reopen under the Waldorf Astoria flag. Fans of the old Sazerac bar (Huey P. Long's favorite) and the hotel's annual Christmas decorations are anxiously awaiting the grande dame's return.
