Though New Orleans has its share of shopping malls and upscale chain stores, the shopping scene is still dominated by the distinctive small stores scattered throughout the city. The French Quarter is filled with family-run specialty shops—European antique showrooms, jewelry stores, antiquarian book shops—that have survived for generations. On a leisurely walk through the old city's backstreets, you're likely to happen upon shopkeepers tending collections of elaborately painted toy soldiers, culinary antiques, or pocket watches. (During the warmer months, you'll likely duck inside, both to satisfy mild curiosity and indulge in a little air-conditioned coolness.)
Over the past decade, Magazine Street has become a small-scale paradise for shoppers. Three separate clusters of homegrown retail—one in the Lower Garden District, one near Louisiana Avenue, and a third Uptown near Napoleon Avenue—line the street, offering plenty of options for clothing, hand-crafted jewelry, and home design items with a distinct sense of place.
