In 1988 I was invited to a birthday party for Lissa Newman, daughter of Paul and Joanne Newman, who lived in the Carlyle at the time. Standing at the elevator in the lobby, the lift door opened and out waltzed a broadly grinning Mick Jagger, accompanied by a beautiful young woman, grinning broader. I rode to the 36th floor and was greeted by a spectacular nocturnal view of Central Park and Tavern on the Green. After a brief appearance at the party I went down to catch Bobby Short in the Cafe Carlyle. Terrific nightcap.
