Posted on: October 09, 2008 at 7:42AMHaving lived in NYC for over 30 years & being one of those New Yorkers who always left town on the long weekends...never realized that as a visitor - the best time is to visit on long weekends. For the past 4 years visiting NYC on Labor Day has been a delight. Weather is generally perfect, City is empty - plenty of cabs and plenty of seats on Broadway. If you are dying to go to one of the 'hard to get a reservation' restaurants ... there should be no problem - also January is very quiet during the month of January. New Yorkers are partied out after the holidays and also don't want to spend money on expensive dinners; since they are recovering from their holiday spending. Also, if you are planning a last minute trip - call some of the 5 star hotels after 4pm on the night you want to stay and ask them for a discount on a room - chances are; if they aren't booked by then - it's better to upgrade a room for a guest and/or give you a good discount - a room that remains empty isn't going to generate and income. Even if they sell at 1/2 price to you - it's still a win for them! This is the best city in the world - no matter what kind of budget you are on - there is something for everyone & it doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. The city also has lots of free events & sights! report a problem
