The crowds surrounding this place every night from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. must deter more diners than they attract. The multi-hour wait is worth it to some, but you'd be better off snagging a table at lunchtime. My advice once you're in: don't even read the menu, lest it dissuade you from ordering the rightly famous and righteously tasty Gnudi -- a dumpling-esque play on usually disappointing gnocchi made with sheep's milk ricotta in a simple brown butter and sage sauce — washed down with Old Speckled Hen on tap. You might not see Scarlett Johansson, but you will have one New York's best informal meals.
