The organized tours ignore the wild coast between the North and South Islands. When you visit Wellington, with or without a tour, TAKE A TOUR of the coast, with it's wild, wild seas and sea lions. Take a tour because the road is often WASHED OUT so you don't want to do this by yourself. We lucked out when we were there and spent a half day on the coast. Fabulous! People on our tour, with a half day to themselves, who chose to walk around downtown, felt like they had really missed out, which they had! My Mother is from New Zealand, and my Aunt lived there for years, so I knew about the coast. It's FAB! Don't miss it! LESSON LEARNED: You may be on a tour, but do your homework, before you go, and when you have some free time, take full advantage of things to see and do! report a problem
