Vermont shopping
Shopping in Vermont means you will probably go home with some cheese and a bottle of maple syrup, just as generations before you have done. But these days, there's a good chance you'll also go home with a Brooks Brothers suit or a Betsey Johnson dress, if you spend time at Manchester's outlet extravaganza; glass and pottery from the Simon Pearce Mill at Quechee; or bags of java from the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Waterbury.
There's no shortage of sports and outdoor stores anywhere in the state, but Burlington has a particularly strong selection of hiker and biker outfitters. It's also home to snowboarding pioneer Jake Burton's flagship store. The outskirts of Burlington, especially the former industrial district of the South End, are now full of funky art shops and studios. But some of the best shopping in Vermont happens when you explore the back roads that knit together the communities of local artists and farmers. There are antique stores galore, yes, but also top-notch galleries and curiosities such as the Vermont Country Store—shopping there means you could go home with just about anything.
