Jupiter Hotel, Portland, Oregon $$$$
Concierge.com's insider take:
The Jupiter is the hub of Portland's indie rock scene, and you're missing the point if you book a room here just to get some sleep. The slick, mirrored lobby areareminiscent of a disco ballis run by cheerful, youthful staff with funky dyed-black tresses. This is all about enjoying the vibe, and there is no end of places and ways to partake of the fun. For one thing, the hotel adjoins the Doug Fir Lounge, one of the city's premier live music spots. A vast tented outdoor space strung with paper lanterns and lined with bamboo planters serves as a casual lounge. There's also Colorbomb Tattoo if you want a lifetime souvenir of your stay here, as well as a hair salon and a gift shop (with lollipops, ramen noodles, pink flamingo flip-flops, and other quirky buys). To further encourage socializing, all of the doors are covered in chalkboards (chalk provided) to allow you to unleash your creativity or leave a sexy note. The white-on-white rooms are pretty basic and send the message that you won't be spending much time in them.
From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:For a ticket to the epicenter of Portland's indie-rock scene, head to the burgeoning east side and the Jupiter Hotel. The 80-room converted motel's small but comfortable rooms have been recast in an appealing cheap-chic modern aesthetic. But the accommodations are essentially just backup for the main attraction: the Doug Fir Lounge, the Jupiter's bilevel bar, eatery, and rock venue. In the upstairs restaurant, walls of shale, faux fur, and Douglas fir logs provide a sleek backdrop for spot-on pub classics and best-avoided attempts at haute cuisine. For that postprandial booty shake, the music scene downstairs defines Portland's cutting edge.2005 Hot List
