Chilean Patagonia restaurants

Charles Darwin, who traveled widely through Patagonia's lower regions in the 1830s, marvelled at a local diet that appeared to consist entirely of grilled beef and maté, South America's green tea. Even today, cowhands and laborers survive on little else, but a scattering of upmarket estancias and hotels, such as Alerce Mountain Lodge and Hotel CostAustralis, and slick town-center restaurants are attempting to raise the cuisine stakes. Ultimately, due to the span of country, you can forget about destination eating: Chances are you'll be eating the fare wherever you're resting your head, and be happy to get it. All that mountain and sea air makes for a ravenous appetite. Go to our Argentine Patagonia guide to view restaurants across the border.
