Peru see + do
Pick up almost any guidebook to—or postcard from—Peru, and the photo on the front will be of Machu Picchu. Our own guide, of course, is no exception. But however deservedly iconic, these ruins represent a small fraction of what the country has to offer. Even if you divide by region, there's an embarrassment of riches. In the Amazon alone, for example, you'll find surreal options in Manu, Tambopata, and the area around Iquitos. So, yes: If you do nothing else in Peru, see Machu Picchu. But if at all possible, do and see a lot else. A number of operators can piece together the ideal itinerary. For classic offerings, try Gap, Myths and Mountains, or Intrepid Travel; for more specialized, nature-intensive offerings, Ecologística Perú or Habitats Peru.
